It may sound strange, but one of my top tips for keeping your skin at its best is to ‘oil up’. Oil has a bad reputation – people automatically think of greasy skin and breakouts when the word oil is mentioned. But oil is a great skin care solution – if you have the right products!
Take a good oil-based product, such as Dermalogica’s Overnight Repair Serum, and massage a couple of drops into your skin late in the evening after you’ve finished your usual skin care routine – you’ll soon feel the benefit of this overnight treat!
This action should lead to the rehydration of your skin, and help to prevent dullness, dryness and other signs of ageing. The aim is to increase luminosity and reduce fine lines. Night time really is the right time for this task – it is when the skin’s cells do all their replenishing, and the oil can go deep down.
And there’s no use just slapping on any old oil – sun tanning oils or something from your kitchen cupboard will not suffice. These are not suited to skin care, and some will just sit on your skin’s surface, not penetrating at all. Besides, different skin care oils have different properties.
Some good oils contain peptides, which are designed to help stimulate collagen production – the magic protein within us that’s responsible for plumping and firming our skin. A product featuring Argan and Rose Oils will be suited to revitalising a lacklustre appearance and targeting those fine lines.
One final tip is to work your chosen oil into the various facial acupressure points as shown in our accompanying diagram. There are eight key pressure points on the face, and these correspond to different sensations – you can help to relieve tension in your sinuses, temples, facial muscles and so on. Pressing an aromatic and powerful skin oil into these areas should intensify the benefits.
